Originally from Oklahoma City, Spencer knew from a young age that he wanted to work in technology. He's always had a love for computers and started coding as early as age 11. At age 15, Spencer launched TablePCBuzz.com, a website he grew to be the largest & most active Tablet PC community on the web (with over 1.5 million page views a month) before he sold it in 2007. For his website & community involvement Spencer was selected as one of the youngest recipients of the Microsoft MVP award for 2 years in a row.
With his passion found early, Spencer got his degree in computer information systems from Oklahoma Christian University and developed his tech and customer service skills working as faculty support in the University's I.T. Department. After graduation, Spencer quickly found work at a Fortune 500 company in the energy industry where he spent eight years before joining the iLS Network team.
With his sights set on Florida, Spencer was drawn to a remote position as a developer with iLS Network. He and his wife relocated to Orlando and pursued their dream of a nomadic adventure. In 2019, the pair spent a year with no home base, traveling across the USA hopping from Airbnb's to staying with friends. They traveled across the country from Florida to Washington State and back. Spencer is passionate about all things travel and loves getting out and experiencing different cultures, lifestyles and cuisines. He is grateful for the flexibility that a remote position affords him and can't wait to travel again soon.
Since starting as a developer, Spencer has advanced to a leadership role as the Director of Product Engineering. He now oversees the technical direction of iLS Network and is always searching for new improvements for the user experience. To keep up with the ever-changing world of tech, Spencer makes sure to stay updated with the latest by watching tech news, reading blogs and listening to podcasts. He also uses these resources to work on the non-technical, soft skill side of being an engineer. In his role as a Director, Spencer sees his success as the success of the team. "My main goal is to be there for my team and to help them through the problems and tasks that they are working on," he said.
Spencer has found meaning in his work by using the power of technology to improve lives and make the world a better place. "When I first started being interested in tech it was just because it was cool," but he quickly realized that "through building the right technology you can really make a profound impact on people's lives." He noted that the choice of where to live defines your lifestyle and improving the iLS systems that renters use to find that perfect fit is just one way the iLS Network team works to improve every day.
